With more than 15+ years of experience in the IT industry, spanning software development/support, application management, customer engagement (Post Sales), Technical Consulting in web/media space, and people management in a dynamic environment; our extremely talented EPAT alumnus Mayur Patil shares with us his incredible journey to Algo trading.

He has completed a 1-year part-time management course, through the Executive General Management Program at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB). He has also pursued a PG certification program in Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) at IIIT-Bangalore.

This is his story.

Hi Mayur, tell us about yourself!

Hi, I’m Mayur Patil. I’m originally from Chennai, India. I did my Engineering and Masters in IT. Since 2005 I have been working in the IT industry, cutting across IT services and product-oriented organizations.

Throughout my career, I was in Bangalore, but due to the pandemic, I’ve been working remotely from Chennai for the last couple of years.

I am currently working as a Delivery Manager at Whatfix, managing the Delivery team for the Americas region, responsible for onboarding and integrating customers with our SaaS platform.

I love listening to music across various genres and languages, I think that’s my favourite pastime when I am not travelling. I also love reading. I try to read as many books as possible, experimenting with different genres.

Being established in your IT profession, why did you dive into Algo Trading?

It was a series of events that made me dive into Algo trading. I was experimenting during my career and that's when data science happened, and I ended up doing a certification course on it.

One of my cousins introduced me to the stock market. And I also got briefly introduced to the whole concept of futures and options and other things. So I kept on exploring and experimenting, trying out my hand on the market, and got intrigued in reading technical charts.

I am very active on community websites and that is where I came to know that there's something called algorithmic trading, and that's where I found EPAT as well. I then took time to even read up articles related to this.

It got me thinking that this might be where I can leverage my experience and technical background. At the same time this inclination towards playing with stocks and futures options. I had gotten passionate about this field and EPAT gave me a chance to take the plunge into learning algorithmic trading.

How would you describe your experience learning Algorithmic Trading at EPAT?

Firstly, I would like to point out that the faculty is incredible. That is what made half of my experience amazing. The way the lecturers teach the subjects and guide you at every turn makes it worthwhile. The journey into Algo trading was made easier and it made me confident in it.

Initially, it was difficult getting back to coding as I had taken a break from it but EPAT has this refresher course for everyone about the basics of finance, coding, and the stock market. This not just helped me but also catered to the diverse audience from different backgrounds who are not familiar with the concepts in this field.

I enjoyed getting back to coding, specifically in Python. The access to different tools made me want to explore more. The excitement of revisiting your coding days and seeing this whole thing again. It felt like actually solving a real-life problem. It was a different feeling for me.

For me, my newfound passion for trading coupled with my technical background had made me consider EPAT. I was eager to learn how new technology could be leveraged to automate trading, and possibly look at a career transition post-certification.

I have started taking more informed and calculative decisions because of the course and I'm able to apply the knowledge that I have gained during my journey in EPAT.

Which feature of EPAT do you feel is the best one?

I only have good things to say about EPAT. But what I loved most about it is the support faculty. The support managers are brilliant! Especially their response times, which is amazing.

Equally amazing are the lecturers. They are extremely patient, they cater to the needs of every individual and answer every question asked during the lecture as well as outside of it. They will always help you with whatever you require during the duration of the course.

Another feature I loved about EPAT is the concept of having lifetime course access and of being a lifetime member of the community. The curriculum is consistently updated based on the trends, technology, and what goes on in the market. You can then access it at any point in your life.

If I consider a switch in my career, to pursue Algo trading as a profession, I’m glad that I’ll still have access to the course when I want to relearn and be updated, which is just amazing.
